Athletics

Sacred Heart College is recognised as one of the top Athletics schools in New Zealand.

We have a strong development programme, based on individual development within a strong team structure and culture. The opportunity for boys to participate at all levels and in a wide range of inter-school and club events is growing as we expose them to competition at meets held during Terms 1 and 4. Our top athletes have been recognised at the national level, when they have been selected to represent New Zealand in meets around the world, and when we have had champions awarded at a wide range of ceremonies. The strength of Athletics as a sport is shown by our top athletes gaining not only the school's top sports awards over the past five years, but also College Sports honours for Athletics in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

We take students to Lloyd Elsmore track in Pakuranga to train in the running, jumping and throwing disciplines. A newly developed sprint squad aims to develop pure speed and athleticism in all of our athletes. We strive to forge links with external experts within athletics clubs and we draw on the experience of recent Old Boys. Our athletes work their way through from the highly successful ‘Twilight Athletics’ early in Term 1, through to Zones and then Auckland Regional Championships. From here athletes are selected and train towards Nationals which are held in the last week of the school year.

Athletics is the base of ALL other sports, and provides a perfect training base for speed and strength over the summer months for those moving through into the winter sport codes. Track and Field Athletics is a great sport in which any student at Sacred Heart can be involved and there is a place for all.
