Gap Year Placement, 2017
Sacred Heart College, a Catholic boarding and day school set in the eastern suburbs of Auckland, was founded by the Marist Brothers in 1903. Its roll comprises 1050 day boys and 160 boarders coming from various parts of New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific rim.
It is on a train and bus network and 15 minute from the centre of the city.
The College has a proud history of academic, sporting and cultural excellence.
Each year, Sacred Heart College provides an opportunity for two fluent English-speaking school leavers from the same or different schools, to join the hostel community for a gap year where they work predominantly in the hostel. Duties include waking and putting juniors to bed, afternoon / evening supervision and support in study, sports coaching etc.
The timetable is sufficiently flexible to allow those interested in playing in local cricket, rugby or football clubs to do so.
Accommodation and food in term time is provided as well as an income paid weekly across the year. Most school holiday times are free and are opportunities to travel within the country, to Australia or for some to the Pacific Islands. Eg Fiji, Rarotonga.
Long weekends are also given (and financially supported) for those who fulfil the role outstandingly. Initiative, hard work and the ability to work unsupervised and with junior students (13-15 years old) is imperative.
Contracts for the applicants generally run from July to July to accommodate the northern hemisphere school and university year.
Applicants need not come from a Catholic or boarding background but must be prepared to support the Special Character of the College.
