Game three in Sri Lanka – match report

Day 3 vs Kandy Invitational XI at Pallakale

Played at an international ground that holds 35,000 – we didn’t quite fill it! Outstanding facilities and we were treated to a massive scoreboard and   good changing rooms.

The game was shortened to 40 overs as locals said the rain would arrive at 4 pm – their clock was an hour fast, it arrived at 3 pm! Lost the toss. Unfortunately they chose to bat, albeit after some deliberation. We quickly had them in trouble with Aston picking up a wicket in his second over. Gibbo, the overseas specialist, not to be out done, then picked up 5 wickets during his 8 overs on the trot (teams decision at first drinks break). It was very good spell of swing bowling, very much like Trent Boult.

They then put on a 60 run partnership which was finally broken by Hugo, albeit in the mean time Scotty had bowled a very good nut which resulted in one of their batsman retiring hurt through discomfort in the groin region! This batsman did return later albeit a little pail still. We then wrapped up the tail quickly. All out for 167 in 33.2 overs. Wides and no balls again an issue with 46 extras. On a very positive note the catching has been outstanding. Pick of the bowlers Gibbo – 5 for 24 off 8. Ben 1 for 6 off 4.2.

Nick and Paul opened and made a quick start before Nick had one keep low and was bowled for 5 – 1/24 off 3.5. Paul and Tim B put together an unbroken partnership of 36, which included a very nice 6 by Tim. Heavy rain arrived and ended the game prematurely – SHC was 60 for 1 after 16 overs at the time. Paul 23* and Tim 19*. A win to SHC on Duckworth Lewis by some 24 runs!

Our unbeaten tour continues but some changes in the line up planned for tomorrow. Has been great to be able to use all 14 players each game.

Happy Easter
