Sacred Heart College students awarded in Chinese essay competition

On February 26, five students from Sacred Heart College received their awards in the 9th New Zealand Chinese essay competition from Dr Fu Jiwei, the NZ Chinese Language National advisor. Jake Kelly-Hulse (Y13), Louis Addock (Y12) and Tom Durkin (Y12) received the Merit awards; Heinrich Metzler (Y12) and Julius Tapert (Y12) won third prize.

The students wrote excellent articles on ‘a personal China-related experience’ and ‘the friendship between Chinese and Zealanders. Dr Fu was impressed by their language skills and confidence.

China overtook Australia as New Zealands largest trading partner in 2013, which highlights the importance of understanding Chinese language and culture for young New Zealanders. As a leading Marist Boys’ College, Sacred Heart College has been offering Chinese for five years to prepare our students for the future.
