The regular rowing season came to an end with 38 of our best rowers and coxwains traveling to Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel to compete in the Maadi Cup, National Rowing Champs.
Over 2000 competitors from 120 schools compete at what is the biggest secondary school sports event in Australasia.
The competition is very tough and the level of performance extremely high. You have to be very good to gain a spot in an A Final. Sacred was in 6 A Finals this year and came away with a GOLD and a SILVER.
Sacred Heart College is now the top boys school for rowing in Auckland and 5th best boys school at rowing in the country.
The U18 Novice coxed Eight crew have gone undefeated the entire season. Coming away with Auckland Champs, NZ Club Champs, North Island Champs and now a Maadi GOLD. Sacred last won this GOLD medal 40 years ago.
Crew: Theo Wright, Tim Farrell, Luca Kirwan, Liam Zinzley, Lawrence Foliaki, Cairo Taupo, Hamish McKay, Tanner Butler, and coxwain Massimo Nicholas.
The U18 Novice coxed Four also won a SILVER medal. This was their only defeat of the year where they narrowly lost to Wanganui Collegiate by just over 1 second.
Crew: Theo Wright, Liam Zinzley, Tim Farrell, Luca Kirwan, and coxwain Massimo Nicholas.
Outside of these two medals we had 10 crews that were in the top 10 of the country, another outstanding accomplishment.
Well done and congratulations to our rowing squad for 2016.
