The House ‘Patere Whakataetae’ competition was held just after lunch at the Inter-house Swimming Sports competition. It had rained earlier during the lunch break but cleared for the event for the coveted Te Wairua o Ngākau Tapu trophy. Judges for the day were Mr Rob Pepping and Mrs Angela Little, with Br John the MC and Mr O’Donnell the scrutineer.
Categories adjudicated on were Kaha (participation and volume), 35 points, Mito o Te Reo (familiarity, clarity, cohesion, delivery), 25 points, Ihi (full involvement , actions, costume, new chants, originality) 25 points, and Wairua Kia Tataki Tane, (X factor and leader, leadership by Seniors, spirit of group and discipline), 15 points.
Presentation order was determined by House names pulled from a hat, thus first up was Marcellin (161 points), followed by Lenihan (146 points), Basil (129), Coolahan (153 points), Stephen (174 points) and lastly Pompallier performed (161).
Many new Chants were added to the repertoire. There was some great leadership from the Seniors to bring full and active participation, not only in the Chants, but the whole day. Congratulations to all the Houses, and especially Stephen House whose Roman theme and dress won the competition and the day.
