As there was a major cricketing fixture on the top field where the annual House Haka Whakataetae Competition is held, this event was transferred to the Auditorium with each House presenting a limited number of candidates. Br John was the MC of the event, Mr O’Donnell the scrutineer and Ms Whetuu Nathan and Mr Francis Stowers the judges.
House order was drawn randomly from Br John’s top pocket. First up was Pompallier House led by Devan Abraham: second was Marcellin led by Caleb Southee-Sami; followed by Stephen with Zac O’Meagher, Basil with Luc Ravel, Lenihan led by Ethan Thomas and lastly Coolahan with Joe Kadio at the front.
The competition was fierce. Participation and volume was generally high. Familiarity with the words and clarity sometimes needed greater attention. Actions were full and showed great involvement but it was the X factor of the leader that was clearly on display in all teams.
With great passion abounding, results were delivered to a very attentive crowd, full marks being from 180. Pompallier came 6th with 106 points, Basil behind them in 5th place with 113 points. Third equal ran Coolahan and Stephen at 130 points, Lenihan coming 2nd with 133 points and Marcellin in first place with 141 points.
If this is a sign of chanting for 2018, the year is going to be a great one.
