A small but talented team of five students ventured out to the Pukekohe Raceway on Sunday to participate in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Duathlon Champs. Perfect conditions greeted the students which meant racing would be fast and furious.
First away was our Junior boys team of Beno and Sam Shaw and Redmond Connolly. The boys were all nicely positioned after the first run but it was here Redmond took the race to the field and opened up a small gap off the front of the bike, with a solid second run Redmond was able to hold on and secure a silver medal with Beno and Sam finishing 6th and 11th respectively.
Andrew Matthews raced with similar tactics to Redmond, positioning himself close to the front on the first run then unleashing the days fastest bike leg to blow the race apart and open up a lead that he was able to hold to the finish winning gold in the Intermediate boys race. The final race of the day saw Mathew Wynne compete with great determination to finish 9th in the senior boys event. Congratulations to Andrew Matthews, Sacred Hearts latest national champion.
