House Chant – Patere Whakataetae Competition
The traditional house chant competition was held in the second week of February just after lunch on swimming sports day. It was competed in glorious summer weather, judged by Br Kevin King and Whaea Jacqueline Carter with Mr O’Donnell the scrutineer and Br John Koorey at the microphone.
Competitors were drawn by lot with Lenihan up first, followed by Basil, Pompallier, Stephen, Marcellin and lastly Coolahan.
The poolside was awash with colour, energy and good humour and while just over ten points generally differentiated four teams, Stephen was clearly outstanding, head and shoulders above the rest. The purple house gained 187 points out of 200 for categories covering volume and participation, familiarity with the chants and clarity, actions and costumes, as well as the x-factor of the team overall. They were funny, clever and creative. Other placings went to Marcellin (170), Lenihan (162), Basil (160), Coolahan (157) and Pompallier (135).
It was a great way to start the year, with an enthusiastic energy for the school and house events to come. Well done Senior House leaders and to all of the participants.
