Triathlon has continued to go from strength to strength this summer with 15 students competing in either Aquathon or Triathlon events. In late March seven students travelled to New Plymouth to compete in the NZSS Triathlon Champs. The first day of competition had students racing in the individual event with Andrew Mathews in the U19 race racing prominently throughout to finish 14th and Jayden Boughey the best of our U16 boys finishing 24th. The second race on day one was the first of the team relay events with the T1/T2 relay. A short sharp event that would see students race through a run to bike transition then a bike to run transition before handing to their teammate for them to repeat. Our U19 team of Andrew and Matthew Wynne combined with Baradene College for a mixed team finishing 4th with our U16 team of Jayden, Matthew Mitchell, Redmond Connolly and Thomas Cummins finishing on the podium in 2nd. This was a non-championship event so no medals were on offer.
Day two of competition saw students racing over a duathlon course after water safety concerns within the Taranaki Port. Consisting of a 500m run followed by a 5km cycle, 1km run students would then pass over to their teammate for them to repeat. Our U19 team had a great race finishing in 2nd only to be disqualified after one of the students was deemed to have cut the course. Our U16 team however lead from start to finish to take the win and the title of U16 boys triathlon team national champions.
