NZSS Cross Country Championships 2019

The 46th NZ Secondary School’s Cross Country Championships was held June 15-16 at Ashbury Park in Timaru. 23 Sacred Heart College athletes supported by three staff (Mr Henderson, Mr Harland and Mr Taucher) traveled down to take part in this 2-day festival of endurance running of the very highest calibre.

Our athletes were involved on Saturday in the individual and teams race through three divisions (Year 9, Junior and Senior). Our boys raced very well and despite a few injury and illness complications, managed to feature well in the teams races. Our Year 9 boys finishing 4th in the 6-man and 5th in the 3-man teams, Junior Boys finishing 6th in the 6-man and 8th in the 3-man, and Seniors finishing 8th in the 6-man.

The star of the meet was Year 9’s Thomas Dufty who finished in the Top-10 for his age-group; an achievement that is very sought after, and earned a presentation at the official prize-giving on the Saturday evening! He is a star for the future. He was strongly supported by the rest of the Year 9’s, who certainly have the goods to make it to the top of their division next year.

Sunday was the Regional Relay Championships, where seven of our boys were selected to represent Auckland in a 5 x 2km relay event at each age-group. Leo Hilton, Finn Monk and Thomas Dufty were in the Year 9 team that finished 6th overall, Beno Shaw was in the Junior team that finished 4th overall, and Matt Wynne, Andrew Matthews and Jack Ryan were in the Senior race where they finished 8th.

The trip was extremely successful and the boys have set firm targets to improve upon their placings at next year’s event in Hawera!
