A small but talented team travelled to Cambridge for the North Island Secondary Schools Cycling Champs during the holidays where our boys pitted themselves against the best riders the North Island had to offer. The team time trial was the opening event with our U20 senior team the best of the results in 8th. The road race was certainly the focus for a number of our boys with Redmond Connolly showing great muscle and no fear in a high speed bunch sprint to finish third with Joel Douglas in 11th. An outstanding result in a field of over 70 riders. Andrew Mathews was the best of our U20 riders in 15th.
Day two of racing saw students racing on a tight technical circuit in a criterium format. In the U15 B grade we had Fletcher Hilton winning silver with Leon O’Brien in fourth. The U17 B grade saw SHC dominate the podium with Ryan McGuire winning and Ethan Hughes in third. The highlight of the competition however, came in the final event with Andrew Mathews in his seventh North Island championship showed that determination and dedication pays off when he used all that experience to demonstrate a near perfect tactical race to claim bronze medal in the U20 A grade.
