Football National Champions – Consecutive Years

The 1st XI football team completed a fantastic achievement this year, winning back to back national tournament titles (The first team in 10 years to achieve this). On the first day of the national tournament, the squad lost a key player Kai Gillespie to a broken ankle but the squad pulled together and achieved something very special.

The 1st XI team had to fend off strong challenges from the likes of Scott’s College, Tauranga Boys and St Peters College through the last 16, Quarter-finals and Semi-finals to make the final against Auckland Grammar.

The final was a hard fought game with high drama. Auckland Grammar scored first with a great strike from their striker. Sam Pointon was able to level the score sending the final into extra time. During the first half of extra time, Sacred Heart was rewarded a penalty which Riwai Stanton calmly scored. The 1st XI was able to hold their nerve for the final 10 minutes of play winning the game 2-1 and becoming fully deserving two-time winners of the national title.

The squad consisted of Brooklyn Baker, Jayden Bos, Ivan Cibilich, Joel Clissold, Owen Comber, Harrison Freeman, Andre Fruh, Kai Gillespie, Matthew Hodgson, Jackson Jarvie, Jake Moosbally, Callum Plunkett Gregory, Sam Pointon, Riwai Stanton, Campbell Strong, and Declan Viljoen.
