Eleven students represented Sacred Heart at this year’s Cycling Northern Tour which also doubled as the New Zealand Secondary Schools Criterium Championships. Held in Mount Wellington. Stage one was a 4km individual time trial along Dunkirk Road, followed by an 800 meter hill climb time trial to the top of Mount Wellington. Day two consisted of the NZSS Criterium race over varying distances around the streets of East Tamaki. During the criterium athletes also raced for points to win the green sprinters jersey.
Our boys represented the college with pride racing towards the front of all their events, however, the star of the meet was Joel Douglas. Finishing seventh in the Individual time trial and 15th in the hill climb Joel had nothing to lose going into the final day. A breakaway early in the Criterium saw Joel and another rider drop the field and collect valuable points in the green jersey competition. The sprint finish saw Joel get to the line first and with that take the crown of U16 NZSS Criterium champion. A result that also saw him finish 2nd in the green jersey points race and 2nd overall in the Northern Tour. An incredible result from a talented young rider.
Other results included Ryan McGuire 1st- Under 17 B final Criterium and Ethan Hughs 3rd Under 17 B final Criterium.
In two weeks the team will head to Palmerston North for the NZSS Cycling Nationals. All the best boys for your final preparations.
