Supporting Champagnat Marist Pre-Schools in Kiribati

A recent drive from our Young Vinnies has resulted in the collection of $1,200 to go towards supporting three Champagnat Marist pre-schools on the Atoll of Tarawa, in Kiribati.

Pre-school education is still largely in its early stages in Kiribati. The Marist Brothers in Kiribati, with the support of the Mission Stewardship team, (comprised of five Lay Champagnat Marists and two Brothers), are overseeing and supporting the Catholic, Marist and professional development of three pre-schools.

The three Marist Schools: they are St Marcellin, with a role of 75 children and seven teachers, Te Itoinimarawa, with 70 children and five teachers, and Angel Peace with just over 50 children and seven teachers. School fees are $10 a term but because most parents are unemployed few can pay this amount. Until two months ago teachers have received no wages, however the Government are now paying teachers $245 a month. But this is on the condition that the pre-schools meet Ministry of Education requirements regarding the necessary buildings, health and safety standards, and teaching resources etc. Three pre-school teachers are now urgently trying to do some local fundraising to meet these requirements by February next year. The St Marcellin and Te Itoinimarawa pre-school teachers, in a very generous way, are all donating all their newly acquired wages back into meeting some of the more urgent needs of their respective pre-schools.

We have received a very heartfelt thanks from the Marist Brothers, – to our Young Vinnies, students, parents and staff who have given so generously to this cause in another Marist mission, thank you.
