Sacred Heart Cycling consists of both Road Cycling and Track Cycling. For Road Cycling we compete in five school events throughout the year, as well as in a number of club events. The major focus is on the fortnightly Auckland Secondary Schools Team Time Trials held on Sunday mornings, the Mt Wellington Regional Schools Championships, North Island and National Championships. The Time Trials are run by Collage Sport, with the timed racing taking place on closed road conditions around Pukekohe Race Track. This venue makes for very safe and competitive racing. Nearly all the top schools in Auckland are represented and each event has approximately 400/500 competitors. There are great facilities for parents to watch the action from the viewing platforms above the garages.
Our coach is the well regarded Logan Mort. He runs his own coaching business (Grit Coaching) as well as mentoring our young riders. We are very pleased to have his expertise and knowledge.
The season runs from May to September, with training recommended all year. Team selections are determined on current form.
Our Track cycling team compete all year round at both Manukau and Cambridge Avantidrome. They also compete at the National Track Cycling Championships in both the junior and senior categories.
Cycling at Sacred Heart is run by a bunch of enthusiastic parents. The parent committee organises and coordinates all the events and day-to-day running of the club along with the invaluable assistance of teachers. Bikes and associated equipment are the responsibility of the parents and students but the committee will provide any help needed with other requirements.
Juniors and Seniors train twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Tuesday session is wind training designed and instructed by the coach with parent help straight after school. Wind trainers are held at school in the cycling shed where all students bikes are securely locked. Tuesday morning all students may store their bikes and gear ready for training after school. The Thursdays training session is a morning training, starting from St Heliers Bay around 5.45am, these are held during Terms 2 and 3. It is also an expectation that students will train for at least one other individual self-monitored session per week.
