Active participation in all musical fields is encouraged at Sacred Heart. Music is actually the known and researched ‘brain development’ subject. It is made up of language, science, mathematics and practical fun performance, which all serve to increase the number of left and right brain cell connections. Students will thoroughly enjoy the practical side of music classes, instruments/vocal lesson and instrumental and vocal groups, which all serve to increase their intelligence and cognitive function. A totally win-win practical and academic subject, with many NCEA credit opportunities for Years 11 to 13 students and Year 10 Music Institute students
There is a wide range of musical opportunities available for students in Music, not matter what type of music your son enjoys. The Department has individual instrument and vocal tuition plus rock bands, concert bands, Jazz Band, Jazz Ensemble, Junior Choir, SHC Senior Chorale, Chamber Orchestra, Piano Quintet and School of Rock. The Music Institute now features for students in Years 7 to 10.
As well as many other performances for events and concerts, the Music Department has three main musical events each year; the ‘Walter Kirby’ Solo and Group Competition for Years 7 to 13 which has been running for more than 70 years, the whole school talent competition‘Legends’ and the ‘Showcase’ concert which is for all of the main music groups. These performances allow our students to perform to their peers, the public and family, while the Smokefree Rockquest Competition, and other similar competitions outside of Sacred Heart, promote our students to the wider public.
Historically Sacred Heart has enjoyed much success in the music field from Paris based renowned concert pianist Jeffrey Grice, to the Finn Brothers, Dave Dobbyn, Bernie Allen, Mike Chunn, Peter Urlich, Rikki Morris, Dr Joe Harrop, Daniel Harua-Club and many others. Our current students continue this rich tradition of musical talent at the College.
