Arts Tie Recipients 2024

The Arts Tie is an acknowledgment of the dedication and talent of senior students representing our College in Arts-related areas. These students have made a significant contribution to one or more of the major Arts in the College: Visual Arts, Music, Drama, Debating, Public Speaking, Media, Creative Writing or Cultural groups. Recipients have consistently performed at a high level in their fields of artistic endeavour within the school, over several years. Additionally, some recipients have achieved a success that is recognised within the Auckland region and/or at a national/international level. 

Congratulations to this year’s recipients:

Mace Cadwallader - Mace is a current Kapa Haka member and has been leader for the Junior group. He has taken part in the Manu Korero speech competitions, and also represented SHC in the recent Pompallier Shield.

Kalani Campbell - Kalani has been an outstanding vocalist during his time at SHC. He has been a vital member of the choir, he was the lead vocalist in our production of Grease and in Big Band. He has been a runner-up in the Walter Kirby competition two years in a row, and a legends competitor for the past 3 years.   

Jasper Clay - Jasper is a familiar face in many areas of performance. Over the last 3 years he has performed at Matariki dinners and Powhiri, as well as working in the ensemble for both We Will Rock You and Grease. In addition to his performances, Jasper has shown great leadership, teaching the school Haka to Junior students, and working on the Junior Production. In 2021 he was recognised with a national award for his acting in a short film.

Ming Deng - Ming has been an active musician throughout his time at SHC. He has played the saxophone for the Big Band for 4 years and the Premier Concert Band for 3 years. He has also been an active member of the Kapa Haka Group since Year 7. He has represented the school at numerous competitions receiving bronze, silver, and gold awards. 

Daniel Doherty - Daniel's greatest claim to fame was that he was the lead in the school production, playing the part of Danny in Grease. He also captained and championed the progress of the Senior A Debate team. After an extensive season, with over 100 teams involved in their division, Daniel and his team will compete in the final next week.

Jacob Fairweather - Jacob has made a significant contribution to music at SHC. He has won awards at Rockquest in his band 'The Rain' including an award for the best lyrics. He plays guitar and sings. Jacob has won cups at Walter Kirby 5 years in a row and has been a valued member of the production band playing guitar and percussion for two years. 

Jordan Filipo - Jordan has been an active member of Samoan Group since Year 9. Senior leader, main dance role as a ‘Taupou’. Led group on Fia Fia night, ASB Polyfest, and Samoa trip. Positive impact especially on the junior students in the group.

Marcus Guerin - Marcus’ role as Kenickie in this year’s Grease was just the latest in a long line of performances for the college. As well as an ensemble role in We Will Rock You and Baradene College’s show Changing Minds, Marcus was also part of the 2022 Shakespeare Evening. Alongside his acting, he is also an accomplished dancer, with several years of dance performances. Marcus is also directing our Junior Shakespeare performance.

Lachie Henwood - Lachie has been a member of Kapa Haka for 6 years. He has been a Leader and speaker for the group taking part in the tour of Europe 2023. He is a soloist singer and was part of the representative waiata group in the Pompallier Cup.

Felix McAuley - Felix is an outstanding guitarist. He has represented the school at Rockquest and Stand Up Stand Out. He has been a member of the rock group 'The Rain' who have won the Chunn Cup at Walter Kirby three years in a row. He has also been a valued member of the production band for two years. 

Samuel Mataele - Samuel has excelled in both vocal and instrumental music here at SHC. He has been our soloist for numerous masses and events since he first started at SHC. He is a valued member of our Premier Concert Band and has been our flute soloist over the years. He has won awards and cups at every competition he has entered and has been the flautist in the group 'Trisosica' who have also won many awards.  

Zhen Ng - Zhen is an outstanding oboist and overall musician. He has represented the school for many years at national and regional competitions. Zhen has won first place at Walter Kirby 6 times and this year was selected as principal oboist for the KBB Honours Orchestra. He has been oboist for the Chamber Group 'Triosica' which has won numerous awards over the years. 

Ciaran O’Hagan - Ciaran has been a valued member of our rock band 'The Rain' and plays bass guitar. He has represented the school at Rockquest and Stand Up Stand Out. He has won many awards over the years at Walter Kirby. He has also been a valued member of the production band for 2 years.  

Ali Ono - Ali has been actively involved in music since he began at SHC. He has been cellist for the chamber group 'Triosica' which has won many awards over the years. He has won cups at Walter Kirby 4 years in a row as both a soloist, and in a group. He recently played in the KBB Honours Orchestra which is not an easy feat. 

Joshua Rhee - Joshua  has been a committed member of numerous school groups throughout his time at SHC. He led trumpet in the Premier Concert Band and Big Band. He represented the school at many regional and national competitions over the years contributing to bronze, silver and gold awards. Joshua set up the rock band 'Last Minute' which has won awards as well.

David Sosene - David has been a performing member of Kapa Haka and the Samoan group this year. He has been the leader of the newly established Cook Island group performing at this year's Matariki Celebrations. David is also the leader of the Hostel Liturgies that are held weekly in our Chapel.

Cole Stephenson - Cole has been a member of the Kapa Haka for 3 years and a Cook Island group performer. He was also involved in the Māori Public speech competitions.

Patrick Tighe-Umbers - Patrick is a talented musician, singer, and actor. Alongside leading the clarinet section in the Premier Concert Band, he has also sung at a number of school Masses, including singing a duet at the Champagnat Mass this year. He also played keys and sang in the school rock band 'Last Minute'. In Grease this year, Patrick stepped into one of the principal roles as Sonny, this was in addition to his role in the ensemble for We Will Rock You in 2023.

David Van-As - David has been a proud member of the Premier Concert band for 5 years. Over the years he has also participated in the orchestra and Dunstan's Band. He has represented the school at numerous competitions including winning a gold award at KBB. 

Ryan Wilkinson - Ryan is a committed actor and dancer who has made a significant contribution to Drama. From performing in the 2022 Shakespeare Evening as a year 10 student, to a minor lead in We Will Rock You, and playing Roger in Grease this year, Ryan’s enthusiasm for performing is consistent and infectious. As well as performing for the college, he is also taking dance classes and performing with Geronimo Dance Studio. Ryan is also directing students in the Junior Shakespeare.

Ezekiel Zumel - Aside from his incredibly memorable performance as Cha-Cha in this year’s production of Grease, Ezekiel has also hosted school events as a very accomplished public speaker. He is also directing junior students in this year’s Junior Production. Outside of school, he is further developing his skills, taking part in dance classes.
