Year 7 & 8 Sport

As Year 7 & 8 students are not eligible for College Sport Auckland competitions, Sacred Heart College has developed specific sports programmes for this cohort. All students participate in our Wednesday afternoon sport during period 5 and 6 with a focus on participation for all students.

During the summer months this involves inter-class and House challenges as well as preparing students for  Athletics and Cross Country. During the winter Terms, exchanges are held in Rugby, Hockey, Football and Basketball with other nearby schools including  St Peters College, Pt England School, King’s School, Dilworth Junior, St Kentigern School and St Kentigern College.

Eastern Zone and Inter Zone competitions are held in Swimming, Rugby, Hockey, Football, Basketball, Cross-Country, Athletics and Touch throughout the year, as well as tournaments for Water Polo and Cricket.

There are also regular inter-school leagues for Water Polo and Basketball where students trial for a team.

Sports Institute

For students who have a high level of skill, knowledge and previous experience in Basketball, Cricket, Football, Rugby or Water Polo, they may be interested in trialing for the Sports Institute.

The aim of the Sports Institute is to improve the skill levels of players at a junior level so that by the time they reach senior level, they are significantly advanced. Boys in Years 7 to 10 participate in the Institute, made up of approximately 130 boys each year across all these year groups.

Students who are involved in the Institute are proving to be fitter, better prepared for their season and more disciplined in their health and fitness. They benefit from presentations by experts that impart key strategies the boys can use to improve their sporting preparation and performance. Pre-season fitness, conditioning, theory, nutrition and time management are covered as well as skill development in their chosen sport
